Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (中文:洞穴狀自動虛擬系統) is a room-sized cube in which each of the surfaces – the walls and floor – could be used as projection screens to create a highly immersive virtual reality environment, which allows users intuitively navigate realistic, life-size environments for research or design. Cave Automatic Virtual Environment is better known by the recursive acronym “CAVE”. The name itself alludes to Plato’s allegory in which prisoners confined to a cave interpreted external events from the shadows and echoes experienced within the cave.
